Getting Started with Medical Cannabis

Medical cannabis in the UK is only available on private prescription from a specialist doctor. The pathway typically works as follows:

  • Step 1 — Check eligibility: Review the conditions page and confirm that you have tried at least two conventional treatments without adequate relief.
  • Step 2 — Book a consultation: Use our doctor finder to identify a suitable prescribing clinic and book an initial assessment.
  • Step 3 — Receive your prescription: If your specialist determines that medical cannabis is appropriate, they will issue a private prescription.
  • Step 4 — Collect from a pharmacy: Take your prescription to any registered pharmacy that stocks medical cannabis, or use our pharmacy finder to locate one near you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medical cannabis legal in the UK?

Yes. Since November 2018, specialist doctors in the UK have been able to prescribe cannabis-based products for medicinal use (CBPMs) for patients with an exceptional clinical need. Medical cannabis is a Schedule 2 Controlled Drug under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, meaning it can be legally prescribed and dispensed with the appropriate authorisations.

Will my GP prescribe medical cannabis?

In most cases, no. NHS guidance currently does not recommend routine GP prescribing of medical cannabis for most conditions. Prescriptions come from specialist clinicians — most commonly neurologists, pain specialists, or private cannabis clinics — who have assessed that the patient has not responded sufficiently to conventional treatments.

How much does medical cannabis cost?

Costs vary depending on the clinic, the product type, and the quantity prescribed. A typical monthly prescription can range from £100 to £400 or more. Clinic consultation fees are separate from the cost of the medicine itself. Costs are not currently covered by the NHS for most conditions.

Can I drive whilst taking medical cannabis?

This is a nuanced area. CBD-only products with no detectable THC are unlikely to impair driving ability. However, THC-containing products can impair concentration and reaction time, and the legal drug-drive limits in the UK apply to THC. You should always follow your prescriber’s advice and never drive if you feel impaired.

What is the difference between CBD supplements and prescribed medical cannabis?

Over-the-counter CBD supplements are food supplements and are not medicines. They are produced to food safety, not pharmaceutical, standards and are typically much lower potency. Prescribed medical cannabis is manufactured to EU-GMP pharmaceutical standards, contains accurately declared THC and/or CBD levels, and is prescribed for a specific medical condition under clinical supervision.
