Find a UK-based prescribing clinician for medical cannabis.
Types of Medical Cannabis Oil Available in the UK
- Full-spectrum oils contain THC, CBD and other cannabinoids and terpenes — they have the most complex pharmacological profile
- Broad-spectrum oils contain multiple cannabinoids but have THC removed to below 0.2%
- CBD isolate oils contain only CBD, with no THC or other cannabinoids
- THC-dominant oils (e.g. 25mg/ml THC) are prescribed for severe pain and appetite stimulation
Your clinician will specify which formulation is appropriate for your condition. Most first-time patients are started on a balanced or CBD-dominant oil before progressing to higher-THC formulations if initial response is insufficient.
How to Take Medical Cannabis Oil
- Oils are administered sublingually (under the tongue) for fastest absorption — hold for 60–90 seconds before swallowing
- Onset when taken sublingually: 15–45 minutes; duration: four to eight hours
- Oils can also be swallowed directly or mixed with food, though this results in a delayed onset (one to two hours) and more variable effect
- Follow the dosing schedule on your prescription — typically a fixed number of drops or ml at specified times of day
The sublingual route is preferred because it bypasses first-pass liver metabolism and produces more consistent blood levels. Swallowed oil behaves more like an edible, which is why onset and intensity can be less predictable.
Dosing and Titration for Oils
- Most prescriptions start at a low dose — e.g. 0.5ml of a 5% oil once or twice daily
- Increases are made gradually, usually every one to two weeks in consultation with your clinician
- Measuring with the provided pipette or syringe ensures accuracy; do not estimate by eye
- Record your dose and symptom response daily to support informed dose adjustments at your next consultation
Oil dosing requires patience. Because effects are slower than inhalation, there is a temptation to increase the dose too quickly. Waiting the full 90 minutes before assessing the effect prevents unintentional overconsumption.
Storage and Shelf Life
- Keep oils in the original amber or dark glass bottle — light degrades cannabinoids
- Store at room temperature (15–25°C) away from direct sunlight
- Refrigeration is not usually required and can cause the oil to thicken
- Most medical cannabis oils have a shelf life of 12–24 months once opened; check the expiry date on the label
Correct storage directly affects the potency and stability of your medication. Oils that have degraded through heat or light exposure will deliver a different therapeutic effect than a fresh, properly stored product.
